“Schools of Life” aid adults in Kazakhstan

KAZAKHSTAN – Throughout the country, class is in session once again – only this time – it isn't just for kids.

OBI's "Schools of Life" give both children and adults the opportunity to learn valuable computers skills free-of-charge.

During the past several months, Operation Blessing's Orphan's Promise has established centers for underprivileged youth in low-income communities throughout Kazakhstan. Offering courses in English and computers, these "Schools of Life" have been a major help to students in both education and the job market.

But according to Nataliya Khomyak, an OBI representative, the success hasn't been limited to young people.

"God is using our training centers to do more than change the lives of kids," she said. "The computer courses also attract adults and are an additional benefit to the whole community [who are] utilizing the computers during the off-hours. For many, it is another chance to receive professional training and learn new skills."

Kunduzbai, for example, struggled as an adult to take care of her disabled parents and ex-convict siblings. She was born into a family of 11 and carried a lot of responsibility.

Education was always a luxury she couldn't afford.

"It had always been my dream to learn computer skills, but neither my parents nor I had money to pay for a course or buy a computer," she said.

All that changed when Kunduzbai started visiting the local "School of Life." With special training from volunteer teachers, as well as access to a computer, she quickly improved her knowledge and skills.

"I am very grateful to those people who have given me a chance to learn," said one student. "Thank you so much for this opportunity!"

"After I finished the computer course I had more chances to find a better-paying job because you need to know how to operate a computer everywhere," she said. "I am very grateful to those people who have given me a chance to learn computers skills free of charge. Thank you so much for this opportunity!"

OBI’s Orphan’s Promise is now operating four “School of Life” training centers in Kazakhstan, helping provide classrooms with computers, materials and other equipment support.
