BAO GUO Village, Hong Kong – Without a buffalo, Yang has no way to cultivate his fields when spring arrives.

The 68-year-old is usually happy to see spring arrive, but this year is different. Snow storms that blanketed central and southern China during January and February not only left a trail of destruction in their path, but also economic devastation.

Government officials report the snowfall is the largest in more than 50 years and estimate economic loss at $11 billion to date.

To make matters worse, warmer weather is heating things up and the ice that formed on his grass rooftop is compromising the structure and nearly forcing it to collapse.

Initially, OB China focused their efforts on immediate needs, providing food, shelter and medical aid following the storm. As roads opened and electricity came back on, OBI workers ventured into rural areas where assistance was still greatly needed.

"The crew spent two hours walking through slippery, muddy footpaths to reach one village with relief items," said one OBI representative.

Relief items included 4,500 bushels of corn, 40 blankets and 100 coats. In addition, crews also handed out school bags, stationary for children and shoes.

In total, OBI China visited several villages, an orphanage and a home for people with leprosy to distribute items. Teams also provided rice for 1,000 families in other rural areas.

Currently, enough funds have been raised to help rebuild 25 houses in these rural areas as part of OB China’s longer term relief for devastated villages.
