MYANMAR (formerly Burma) - Nearly 4,000 have died and almost as many are still missing following a devastating cyclone that pounded the region for more than 10 hours during the weekend, state media reported on Monday.

Cyclone Nargis dumped 20 inches of rain and battered the delta region with 150 mph winds leaving uprooted trees, downed power lines and extensive flooding in its wake.

Government officials acknowledged as many as 10,000 people could be dead and ruling military junta issued an international appeal for assistance. A state of emergency was declared across most of the country.

Responding to the crisis, Operation Blessing is teaming up with German partner, Humedica, in a medical mission to assist cyclone victims.

"OBI is also helping to supply an initial shipment of medicine," said OBI President Bill Horan.

OBI teams are standing by to respond to the needs as more information becomes available.
