OBI teamed up with MAP International and DHL in order to rush a shipment of $150,000 worth of medication to Tegucigalpa. |
HONDURAS– For nearly two weeks, heavy rain has soaked Honduras killing more than 100 people and causing massive mudslides and flooding.
The recent disaster has been compaired to Hurricane Mitch, which hit Honduras in 1998.
At the request of The First Lady of Honduras, Xiomara Castro de Zelaya, Operation Blessing is responding with much-needed relief supplies and equipment.
OBI teamed up with MAP International and DHL in order to rush a shipment of $150,000 worth of medication to Tegucigalpa. The medication, which included antibiotics, pain relievers, anti-inflammatory medication and rehydration salts arrived this past weekend.
In addition to the medication, OBI has also assembled two shipping containers filled with 75,000 pounds of emergency supplies including 17,000 MRE meals, 3,000 blankets, 12,000 hygiene products and 10,000 cans of vegetables. Those containers will arrive later this week.
"This disaster is shaping up much like the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch when mudslides buried entire villages and killed thousands," said Operation Blessing President Bill Horan. "Honduras is a tiny country filled with hard-working people who need our help. We hope the humanitarian community joins us in lending a hand."

OBI has teamed up with the Red Cross as well as the COPECO (Permanent Commission of Contingencies) to help distribute the supplies. In addition, OBI workers are trying to secure a water purification unit to send in-country.
Aid workers delivered water and basic food to 100 families in Los Llanos, Los Mangles, and Los Puentes and sent an emergency delivery to four refugee camps in the department of Olancho where 450 children benefited.
Along with the church "Oasis de Amor," OBI provided aid and assistance to nearly 200 families by getting them to a nearby refuge where they were given food and water.
This is not the first time OBI has responded in Honduras.
In March, OBI began an anti-parasite program that resulted in 10 million children in Honduras being treated with medication throughout the year. In April, OBI, MAP International and DHL teamed up to deliver 700 doses of the life-saving drug Factor VIII. The drugs helped treat hemophiliac patients whose lives were at risk because of a local shortage of the medication.
OBI also partnered with the Mayo Clinic to bring a young girl to the USA for life-saving surgery during the summer.
