Quake victims find relief

Sadin, above, is one of many quake victims who have received emergency aid from OBI teams.

TASIKMALAYA, Indonesia - Like many Indonesians, Sadin is now without a home.

The 50-year-old man had been forced to sleep outside after a powerful 7.3-magnitude quake shook the Indonesian island of Java last week, destroying his home along with thousands more. The death toll has risen to 59 and more than 400 people are injured, according to the National Disaster Coordinating Agency.

“The quake shook our building here for about 2 minutes, and sent millions running out of their houses and places of business,” said Mark McClendon with Operation Blessing Indonesia.

Two disaster relief medical teams deployed to the hardest hit regions. The first, in Tasikmalaya, a city approximately 70 miles northeast of the epicenter, which had as many as 11,728 houses heavily damaged. The second region was the Regency of Ciamis with more than 8,000 heavily damaged houses.

A team of doctors and support staff are treating injured victims and distributing family emergency packages in the hardest hit regions.

Operation Blessing has a team of medical and support staff on the ground who have provided emergency medical care to more than 2,000 injured quake victims and distributed several hundred family emergency packages containing rice, drinking water, instant noodles food, baby and children's food, blankets and hygiene packs.

For Sadin, it was much-needed relief.

"Thank you to OB for medicines, and your doctors. My body was in pain, but now I have medicine. Thank you for helping us," he said.

Operation Blessing will continue to evaluate the situation and determine further relief needs of victims.
