A devastating 7.6-magnitude earthquake has left more than 500 dead and many more injured.

PADANG, Indonesia - Within 24 hours of the devastating 7.6-magnitude earthquake in West Sumatra that killed more than 500 people and injured hundreds more, OB Indonesia teams were deployed and providing emergency medical relief to victims.

Thanks to critical air support from OBI partner, Mission Aviation Fellowship, two teams flew into the hardest-hit area of Padang yesterday and immediately set up a base camp of relief in the middle of town.

Additional medical personnel are being flown in later this week and plans are in place to begin distributions of survival and shelter kits.

“Tomorrow our total team in Padang expands to 30 people and we will be doing emergency medical relief and distribution of shelter kits,” said OB Indonesia director Mark McClendon.

“We have two ambulances on a Navy ship that sails tonight for Padang. Along with that we have generator sets, fuel drums, and 1,000 survival kits.”

OBI’s longtime German partner, Humedica, is also sending a medical team to base with OBI in Padang.

This disaster comes on the heels of OBI’s continued relief efforts for typhoon victims in the Philippines. To date, disaster relief teams have reached more than 29,000 Filipino victims with relief such as emergency food, water, clothes, medical care and cleanup assistance.
