A mother’s cry for help

Nancy and her children were rescued from the roof of their home and taken to a refuge center.

PHILIPPINES - Nancy’s week began and ended with a rescue.

After Typhoon Ondoy hit, the second floor of the building where her family lived became flooded, forcing Nancy and her four children to flee to the roof where they waited until they were rescued.

Their home and belongings destroyed, the family was taken to a refuge center housing victims.

“The place was so crowded,” recalled Nancy. “I had tears in my eyes. Is this how my life is going to be?”

Nancy and her children found a small corner of the room that had not yet been claimed. Her husband was still trapped in another village and could not return home.

In the days that followed, Nancy began to notice boils developing on her children’s heads and feet. Her second youngest son, Richard, scratched at them until they bled—his condition worsening each day.

“I was desperate for help,” Nancy said. “I couldn’t ask anyone for money to consult a doctor for all around me were poor too.”

Fortunately, a second rescue for Nancy and her family was about to happen.

Richard, her second youngest son, plays with a balloon animal after begin treated by doctors for scabies.

The next morning she woke up and learned that a medical team from Operation Blessing was coming to the center.

Doctors diagnosed all four children with scabies and gave Nancy free medicine for their treatment.

“Thank you so much that you came to help my family and others,” Nancy said. “I felt so loved and cared for by the Operation Blessing doctors and staff.”

To date, Operation Blessing and partners have helped more than 168,000 victims with medical services or relief goods distributions.
