Operation Blessing’s domestic disaster response team responds to the massive floods in the Nashville area. |
GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. – For several months, Abbey Sanders’s heart has been to help residents in a struggling community in Gallatin, Tenn., by bringing them food.
When massive floods recently overwhelmed the entire Nashville area, Abbey became particularly concerned about the welfare of the small community.
She drove to Gallatin to check on the residents, and found 30 families desperately in need of supplies. The trailers in the community had flooded with four and a half feet of water and residents were lacking food and water to get through the week.
So Abbey went in search of help. She found Operation Blessing at Living To Go Church in Goodlettsville distributing 40,000 lbs of relief supplies they had trucked into the area. When OB staff heard about the community, they loaded disaster supplies into several vehicles and headed straight to Gallatin.
There, OB staff met Laura, a married mother of two who had lost nearly everything she owned in the flood. Now she was just trying to figure out how she would provide food and water for herself, her husband, and their children, ages 7 and 4.
Despite the fact that water surrounded her, Laura knew the dangers of consuming floodwater and had worried over what she would give her children to drink.

Laura, a mother of two, receives relief supplies including food and water from Operation Blessing. |
When Operation Blessing arrived to her house with food supplies, water, and MREs (meals-ready-to-eat), she was overwhelmed.
“I’m very grateful,” Laura said. “To have someone bring me water so I can give it to my children. It’s very important because on a hot day like this, I know they can get dehydrated very easily.”
In addition to handing out relief supplies, OBI’s mobile kitchen is preparing and distributing hot meals to families still stranded in their homes and communities.
Teams will also begin clean-up and recovery efforts for affected families, with a focus on helping those who are elderly, uninsured and have special needs.
