| Regent students help bag groceries to distribute to residents at New Life Christian Center. |
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Students from Regent University set aside their pencils, textbooks and laptops recently for a different kind of learning experience.
On this particular Friday, the “lecture” was on serving and the “classroom”—the local community.
In response to a service initiative from Regent University President Dr. Carlos Campo, Operation Blessing set up two service projects.
Students came together for one day to Operation Blessing’s Chesapeake-based warehouse to help clean up disaster relief equipment, paint and more. A second project was set-up with OBI’s long-time partner, New Life Christian Center, to help prepare and serve a meal for community residents in need as well as pack and distribute groceries. The Center serves lunch and provides groceries to approximately 100 people once a month.
“Dr. Campo has been emphasizing volunteer service with the Regent student body,” said Jody Herrington, U.S. director of disaster relief for OBI. “The plan is to have additional service days throughout the year for Regent students to volunteer with us in an effort to help create that culture of service.”
