WEST SUMATRA, Indonesia – In the wake of a 7.7-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that struck off the coast of Indonesia earlier this week, aid workers are struggling to reach victims in the remote, hard-hit Mentawai Islands in West Sumatra.

Operation Blessing immediately deployed teams to Wasior Papua, and also central Java in response to the eruption of Mount Merapi, but are concentrating the bulk of their relief efforts in the remote Mentawai Islands.

“The OB team has three doctors, two nurses, and several others to work the distribution of supplies and medicines,” said OBI’s Indonesia Director Mark McClendon. “There is no airstrip, so they will travel boat to be in Mentawai by tomorrow a.m.”
As of Wednesday, at least 282 people were killed and 411 people remain missing, Indonesia's Antara state news agency reported.
