HAMPTON ROADS, Va. – A good night’s sleep has just gotten a little easier for those with no place to call home in Hampton Roads.

The Judeo-Christian Outreach Center (JCOC) is a crucial resource for the homeless of Hampton Roads, but like many non-profits, they were struggling to stretch their resources to meet the overwhelming needs.

“Some of the individuals, before they come here were sleeping in a car, or on someone’s couch, and in some cases they were sleeping in the woods,” said Molly Young, executive director of JCOC.

When they come to JCOC, they are given the opportunity to stay for up to six months, with beds, showers, three hot meals a day and help getting back on their feet through resume building and budget planning classes.

Teams from OBI helped JCOC workers prepare the new dormitory for shelter residents.

Recently, JCOC renovated a new men’s shelter with more space, but they didn’t have the funds to purchase linens and blankets for the beds. So they turned to Operation Blessing for help.

“Operation Blessing immediately said, ‘Whatever you need, we believe in the work JCOC does, we’re going to purchase those items,’ ” said Diamond Jones, JCOC volunteer coordinator.

The need was for sheets, mattress pads, pillows, blankets, towels and other basic linens. Operation Blessing teams purchased the supplies, delivered them, and helped ready the beds for those in need of a warm place to sleep.

“Operation Blessing just came immediately and stepped up to the plate and now we have this dorm ready where they can walk in and see everything is new and fresh and clean,” Young said. “I love that Operation Blessing gave us the best linens, like they would buy for their own families. This says a lot to the residents and makes them feel so valued.”
