OBI linked up with World Concern to deliver two 40-foot containers filled with soy-enriched rice to the country. |
Haiti – Triple hurricanes, food riots and inflation have all added to a growing hunger crisis in Haiti.
But thanks to a partnership between World Concern and Operation Blessing, a little rice will go a long way in helping hungry families.
The small island produces less than half of its own food and imports the rest. Then when drought hit the region last year followed by three hurricanes, crops were destroyed, creating a widespread food shortage.
OBI linked up with World Concern to ship two 40-foot containers filled with soy-enriched rice to the country – enough to provide more than half a million meals to residents.
The distribution was done by partners of the AERDO HIV/AIDS Alliance in Haiti with the goal of providing nutritional support to those who are most vulnerable and at-risk.

The food provided more than half a million meals to local residents. The distribution was aided by partners AERDO and HIV/AIDs Alliance in Haiti. The goal was to get nutritious food to those who are sick. |
"People often go to bed without eating," said Christon Domond, World Concern's country director in Haiti. "Haitian radio is reporting that some even resort to eating dirt mixed with salt that is made into a 'pizza.' "
The rice was particularly helpful for one grandmother who is the sole caregiver for her nine grandchildren after their mother died of AIDS. She sells charcoal to buy what little rice she can to feed the children, usually amounting to just one meal a day.
"Hopefully God will always find a little bit of something to give the children," she said. "I am very happy to receive the rice."
The food was distributed in allotments of 12 bags, or 72 servings, per family. Families were also given instructions on how to cook and preserve the food.
OBI and World Concern recently shipped a third container of soy-enriched rice, adding another 135,000 meals for distribution.
