CHESAPEAKE, Va.– This was not the mid-life crisis Bill and Darlene had planned on.
In just one year, the 48-year-old mom of four lost her job, leaving her husband Bill, 50, as the sole provider. Then, unexpectedly, their eldest son was diagnosed with a spine tumor.
Surgery and months of physical therapy for their son caused the medical bills to spike and drained whatever finances Bill and Darlene had—leaving them with a 3-month overdue mortgage payment and an empty pantry.
“Everything hit us at the same time,” Darlene said. “We had no control. All we could do was pray.”
Bill and Darlene applied for help at House of Blessing, a ministry outreach of Harvest Assembly of God Church. The ministry is one of 31 local partners that pick up food and relief product every month from Operation Blessing’s Chesapeake, Va., warehouse.
Now, every week Bill and Darlene are given free groceries such as salads, fresh vegetables, canned goods and more to sustain their family in the hardest of times.
“Our pantry used to be bare,” Bill said. “We now enjoy miraculous provision!”
And they’re not alone. Across the U.S., thousands of desperate families just like Bill and Darlene’s are being blessed thanks to more than 5,200 partnering agencies and food pantries nationwide who receive groceries and relief product from Operation Blessing.
“We probably wouldn’t eat without this help,” Darlene said.
