Carl and Stacey are raising their three girls on a tight budget, but when medical bills began adding up, they didn’t know how they would afford food. |
NEWPORT, Pa. – For months, Stacey would ask herself the same desperate questions.
“How are we going to pay our rent, medical bills, and purchase food?”
Eight years ago, Stacey’s husband Carl suffered a devastating motorcycle accident. After being resuscitated twice and flown by helicopter to the nearest trauma center, it was unclear whether he would even survive.
Fortunately, Carl did survive his injuries, but even after 40 surgeries, he wasn’t physically able to go back to his job as a mason. Stacey works for a local non-profit and the couple attempted to support their three young girls on her salary. But as the economy worsened, so did their situation.
Carl’s medical expenses were adding up and Stacey worried about how they would pay all of the bills and keep food on the table.

Now, Carl and Stacey are finding relief through Bread of Life, an OBI-supported food outreach in Newport, Pa. |
“It is always worrisome as a parent—what kind of effect will it have on your children if they do not have the proper nutrition?” Stacey asked.
“With our family budget, there were some months where we would not have had food if it weren’t for Operation Blessing,” she said.
Operation Blessing was able to help Stacey and Carl get through their hard times through a longstanding partnership with a local Newport food outreach, Bread of Life.
Bread of Life and Operation Blessing have been working in partnership for 16 years. Every month, OBI’s Hunger Strike Force delivers more than 100,000 pounds of food to the distribution center. With the help of those supplies, Bread of Life reaches approximately 1,200 families every month.
Because of that partnership, Stacey doesn’t have to worry about her daughters’ nutrition needs anymore. “We are very appreciative that we have been able to feed our family because of this wonderful blessing,” she said.
Bread of Life is just one of more than 5,000 partnering ministries across the U.S. that receive truckloads of food and product from Operation Blessing. To help more families in need, click here. For every $25 we receive, we can provide one family with groceries for a month!
