Gary, Rebecca, and their five children came to Big Reach Center of Hope for food after the economy worsened.

GREENFORD, Ohio – With five children to provide for and no income to speak of, just making ends meet seemed nearly impossible for Gary and Rebecca.

The couple had been working in road construction when they were simultaneously laid off from their jobs. Gary was eventually called back to work, but Rebecca wasn’t.

So she decided to start her own house cleaning business. But as time passed and the economy worsened, many of Rebecca’s clients could no longer afford to hire her. Then winter came, limiting the amount of available construction work and leaving Gary literally in the cold trying to find other jobs to provide for his family.

OBI’s partner organization, Big Reach Center of Hope, serves nearly 250 families in need every month.

That’s when they turned to Big Reach Center of Hope for help. The Operation Blessing partner organization helps more than 250 families every month with much needed food supplies.

“People just can’t make it and they can’t afford to go somewhere else where there is more work,” said Scott Lewis, director of the center.

“Without [Operation Blessing and Big Reach] I don’t know what we would have done in those times,” said Rebecca who now volunteers her time with Big Reach. “It really made a big difference.”

Operation Blessing first partnered with Big Reach four years ago and today, OBI’s Hunger Strike Force trucks deliver two truckloads of food to Big Reach every month, totaling nearly 70,000 pounds of food and supplies.

“Today, with our food distribution going on, we’re able to help a lot of families,” Scott said. “We couldn’t do it without Operation Blessing.”
