Miguel loads groceries from House of Blessing into his car.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – For years Miguel and his wife Josie provided for their two children by working hard in their respective fields as a master plumber and a certified nursing assistant.

But then Miguel lost his job due to the downturn in the economy. Though he worked hard to find a new job, he was consistently told that he was overqualified.

Soon, they could no longer afford the mortgage payments on the house they had recently moved into, so they moved into a smaller apartment and put their home up for sale.

“I kept thinking, I’m a young man; I should be able to go out and find a job to feed my family,” Miguel said. He did find one position, but after a month of work was let go because they simply couldn’t pay him.

When Josie’s income alone couldn’t make ends meet for their family, Miguel turned to an Operation Blessing-supported food pantry, House of the Blessing, for help. There, Miguel and hundreds of other families in need receive bags of groceries every week.

House of Blessing, an Operation Blessing supported food pantry, serves more than 300 people at each food distribution.

Feed a hungry child today

“I don’t know how I would be able to afford meals for my family if it wasn’t for House of Blessing and Operation Blessing,” Miguel said.

House of Blessing is one of more than 30 local food pantries that receive supplies from Operation Blessing’s Virginia warehouse.

“Every bit of what Operation Blessing has given to House of Blessing has been given to those in need right away,” said Pirkko Lee, Director of Benevolence at HOB. “The food and the drinks Operation Blessing provides to us is a big help because people can’t afford it.”
