CENTER POINT, Texas – Rachel never expected her income alone to provide for her family—she and her husband, Ruben, had long depended on both of their jobs to support their family.
Feed a hungry child today
But then Ruben was diagnosed with cancer, and only four months later he lost his job. Now Rachel’s income alone must provide for their family of eight, who all live in a 3-bedroom mobile home.
To help make ends meet, Rachel works as a janitorial supervisor at a highway rest stop. But working isn’t easy for Rachel, who suffers from arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome and back pain.
So to put food on the table, Rachel goes to a nearby food pantry twice a month to receive much-needed groceries and supplies provided in part by Operation Blessing.

| The OBI-supported food pantry helps more than 140 families every month, many of whom live below the poverty line. |
“It’s been tough,” Rachel said. “If it wasn’t for Operation Blessing and the food pantry I don’t know what I would do.”
One way that Rachel expresses her gratefulness is by giving her time back to the food pantry and volunteering at the distributions.
“Even though I still need food, I love being able to help give out food boxes too,” she said.
Rachel’s family is one of more than 140 families who receive food from the pantry, which is located in a town where almost 90 percent live below the poverty line.
“The families we support would have no help, no assistance, and no hope without this food,” said Michael McDaniel, founder of the food pantry. “To us, our partnership with Operation Blessing means everything.”
