APOPKA, Fla. – As a commercial kitchen repairman, John has always been in the business of helping others—especially when it comes to the food business.
But after working for the same company for 19 years, John wasn’t expecting the tables to turn on him and suddenly find himself laid off and facing a desperate situation.
His wife, Yvonne, suffers from a disability that prevents her from working, so their 22-year-old daughter, who works full time and also attends school full time, stepped up to help out.
But it wasn’t enough.
Before long, they were struggling to make ends meet and their cupboards were bare. “I would have to choose between keeping the lights on and putting food on the table,” John said.

To help provide for their family of six, John turned to a local food pantry supported by Operation Blessing. There, he received the groceries he needed to sustain his family.
“The food from Operation Blessing has kept our family from going hungry and kept us from having to choose between paying our bills or paying for food,” Yvonne said.
Today, John picks up odd jobs where he can, and he spends a lot of his time working in his vegetable garden, in hopes of both nourishing his own family and donating fresh produce to the food pantry to help others in need.
“I may not have a lot of money, but this is a way I can give back to people who helped my family during this tough time,” John said.
