Dental treatment brings a smile

Dorthea received free dental care at the dental outreach in Norfolk, Va. The mission was sponsored by OBI and Oral Heath Care of South Hampton Roads.

NORFOLK, Va. – After standing in line most of the morning, Dorthea legs ached with pain and her feet had already started to swell.

All she wanted to do was sit down, but she couldn't leave her place in line.

"I'm a diabetic," she said. "It's hard to stand for long periods of time."

A man in line noticed Dorthea was uncomfortable and found her a chair, then held her place in line. Sitting at the entrance, she greeted people as the line slowly moved passed her.

Dorthea wasn't seeking treatment for her diabetes, but she did receive care at a free dental mission sponsored by Operation Blessing and Oral Health Care of South Hampton Roads. The mission was held at First Baptist Church in Norfolk Oct. 26-28 and was open to the public.

"I've been suffering for two weeks with my teeth," she said. "It's been unbearable."

Dorthea was one of 239 patients treated during the dental mission. The value of services offered during the three-day event is valued at more than $70,500.

During the mission, 239 patients were treated and the value of services offered during the three-day event is valued at more than $70,500.

"The dental mission was one of our largest domestic events in terms of patients, volunteer involvement and value of services," said Tim Elliott, OBI's U.S. Medical Program Manager. "If we don't host these events, many will go without dental care."

Dorthea, who doesn't have health insurance and lives on a stipend of Social Security each month, says the event not only helped her dental hygiene but lifted her spirits as well.

"I didn't know where else to go," she said. "I didn't have anyone to turn to until I found this."

Average services provided for each patient were $295. In addition, more than 100 volunteer dentists and hygienists were on hand to provide care.

"The need for dental care is widespread," said Dean Nowotny, senior manager of domestic programs for Operation Blessing. "There are not many avenues to find help with those needs and OBI is working to fill that void."

In addition to the dental care, groups such as the Lion's Club were also there providing free optical services.

"I can't thank you enough," Dorthea said. "This is just what I needed."
