NORFOLK, Va. – Badly-needed health care and other critical services came to the homeless of South Hampton Roads on February 28 as part of a nationwide initiative to assist homeless adults.

The event, known as Project Homeless Connect, was the result of a partnership between the City of Norfolk, the United Way of South Hampton Roads, the Virginia Dental Association (VDA) and Operation Blessing, along with other organizations.
More than 900 volunteers contributed time and talent to help 853 individuals in desperate need of dental, medical, hygiene and financial help. OBI's state-of-the-art mobile dental clinic was on-site at the Norfolk Scope Arena to help provide cleanings and other oral health care.
Through local events such as these and weekend outreaches, OBI’s mobile dental clinic provides thousands of dollars worth of free dental services each year to those who are uninsured or could otherwise not afford such care.
“This event was a great success,” said Karen Ball, domestic programs manager at Operation Blessing. “We hope to do more in the future.”
In addition to providing attendees with medical and employment opportunities, more than 2,000 hot meals were served throughout the day, and 57 people were approved for local housing.
This was the fifth year the event was sponsored in Norfolk and part of a 100-plus city initiative throughout the nation coordinated by the US Interagency Council on Homelessness.
