The dream of a better home

SANTA LUCIA, El Salvador – Like most fathers, Jose wants to provide only the best for his family.

Despite working hard, the young father earns just $4 a day. Out of that meager income, he and his wife, Miriam, saved every cent they could until they had enough for a house. They built a home out of the only material they could afford—adobe, which is a mixture of mud and dry grass.

But the adobe house began deteriorating and their living conditions worsened. The house leaked when it rained, allowing humidity in and attracting mosquitoes, and the children were getting sick.

Thanks to an unexpected blessing, however, Jose and Miriam’s dream for a better home was about to come true.

Operation Blessing partnered with Golden Acres Baptist Church from Pasadena, Texas, and A Roof For My Country, an institution that builds houses for the poor. Together, they spent 2 days constructing wooden homes for impoverished families in the community of Santa Lucia.

Jose and Miriam were one of three families chosen to benefit from this project. Now, they can sleep peacefully in a sturdy, wooden home that doesn’t leak when it rains.

But Operation Blessing tackled more than just home-building projects in Santa Lucia. With the donation from Golden Acres Baptist Church, teams also set up free-range chicken farms in the community, benefiting 23 families with improved nutrition and a source of income.

OBI also addressed the community’s lack of water by building a cistern that will capture water during the 6-month rainy season, giving residents access to a water source year-round.
