Estela’s former house was made of wood planks and plastic bags pieced together, leaving her family vulnerable to the wind and rain that would easily penetrate their home. |
GUATEMALA – Estela understands hard work.
The single mom of three works each day hand-making dozens of adobe bricks made of dry grass and mud.
Watch: Single mom gets new home
She sells around 50 a day, but at only 12 cents each, the $6 she earns daily goes toward feeding her family and sending the children to school. There is nothing left over to help improve the meager shelter they call home: a house made of wooden planks and plastic bags pieced together and easily penetrated by wind and rain.
“The only dream that I have is that someday I will have a safe and clean house where my children can stay out of danger,” Estela said.
Inside is not much better. There is only one bed, which the children share, so Estela sleeps in a metal-framed upright chair after working hard all day. The family’s stove is an old barrel that Estela found on the street.

“Finally, I have my own house,” said Estela pictured here in front of her new home. |
When Operation Blessing Guatemala heard about her situation, they went to work immediately on building her a new home.
“Thank you God and Operation Blessing!” Estela said with tears running down her cheeks. “Finally, I have my own house!”
To complete her home, Operation Blessing also surprised Estela by giving her a new bed.
Estela is one of several families who have received a new home from Operation Blessing. OB Guatemala is currently building one home a month for families in need.
