| Luis and Cynthia used to live in this makeshift home fashioned out of sheets of plastic and pieces of cardboard. |
PERU – Luis watched helplessly as his young children shivered through the cold, windy nights in their little makeshift home made out of plastic and cardboard.
Desperate to provide a better home for his family, this young father felt even more helpless when his wife Cynthia became sick with a high fever.
He took her to the nearest medical clinic, but was met with more devastating news.
“We stood outside the clinic starting at 3 a.m.,” he said. “But when we got in, we found out that we didn’t have enough money for tests or medicine.”
Luis stayed at home to take care of his wife and children, and in the process, lost his job.
When Operation Blessing teams first met Luis and Cynthia, they immediately offered to help.

| Luis, Cynthia, and their two children, Vila, 3, and Jonathan, 1, now have a sturdy house to protect them from the cold and windy weather in Peru. |
First, they brought Cynthia to a doctor where she was able to get antibiotics to fight the infection in her body. Then, the team surprised Luis by building his family a sturdy new home made of wood as well as providing them with new mattresses, cooking supplies, food and even toys for the children.
“After we got the house, I remember my daughter praying, ‘Thank you, God, for my window, and my door, and my bed and my toys,’” Cynthia said.
“I was so happy,” Luis said, “just thinking about the fact that this was our last cold night…and that my children will have a warm place to sleep.”
But Operation Blessing did more than build a new house—the team also gave Luis a set of brand new carpenter tools to help him find another job in construction.
“Thank God for Operation Blessing!” Luis added. “You helped my wife, gave us a new home and tools. Thank you!”
