| The women of Kado are hard at work creating beautiful jewelry to help support their families. |
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – When Dorrisaint relocated to the city of Port-au-Prince from her small village, she did it with good reason—her little girl needed medical care.
Young Adianne struggles with sickle cell anemia, and in the city she is able to get the treatment that she needs to remain healthy. Read more of Adianne’s special story here.
But in their new city, Dorrisaint was in desperate need of a job to support her six children. That’s when she learned about Kado, an OBI-supported microenterprise charity that means “gift” in Haitian Creole.
At Kado, Dorrisaint joins other mothers like her who take recycled materials, such as cereal boxes, and handcraft them into beautiful pieces of jewelry that is much like the artists themselves: beauty molded from tragedy. Through the sale of these pieces, Dorrisaint and the other women are able to give their children food, shelter and even an education.
