Kumari and her neighbors collect water for their families from a shallow, muddy riverbed.

KARRABALLI, India – It’s hard to imagine fearing for your life every time you need to get some water—but that was the case for 19-year-old Kumari.

As the eldest daughter of her family in the Kondadhora tribe, Kumari cares for her younger siblings and tends to the household chores while her parents work as day laborers at a nearby farm.

One of those chores is to fetch water—which requires Kumari to walk nearly a mile along a path inhabited by poisonous snakes to reach the nearest water source. But the shallow water is filthy and rife with contaminants that spread sickness and disease in her community.

Kumari and her sister now have a clean water well in their village.

Kumari and her sister now have a clean water well in their village.

Worse, the river that serves her entire village is small and during the heat of the summer it often runs dry, leaving Kumari and her neighbors without a water source.

When Operation Blessing heard about their need, they arrived in Kumari’s village and drilled a water well to give Kumari and the villagers of Karraballi safe access to clean water.

“Kumari and her family are relieved that the well is close to their home and there is no need for them to walk the dangerous path to the river anymore,” OBI staff said.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
Help break the cycle of suffering by giving toward Operation Blessing's water wells and cisterns program. A gift of $1,800 can drill a well for villages and supply families with clean drinking water.
