Fish Farming

A world hungry for food

At a time when fish are in high demand and scarce in local waters, a team of Haitians are learning how to farm tilapia.

HAITI – I love the gospel stories about Jesus feeding the multitudes. When faced with a hunger crisis, Jesus gave thanks, prayed and multiplied a few fish and loaves of bread into enough to feed thousands. Those stories seem so fitting, even today, as we struggle in a world hungry for food and starving for God. Operation Blessing is striving to emulate the teachings of Jesus by utilizing lessons learned from the miracle of the loaves and fishes.

The new Chapel Saint Rose of Lima at Zanmi Beni.

How well did you “Zanmi Beni” today?

The new Chapel Saint Rose of Lima at Zanmi Beni.

HAITI – No one really expects a grammar lesson in church. But for those attending the chapel dedication on the grounds of Zanmi Beni Children’s Home in Haiti, it was a lesson worth hearing.

Until recently, Zanmi Beni, which means “Blessed Friend” in Creole, has always been a noun—a place of refuge and healing for orphaned, abandoned and special needs children in Haiti.

The children’s home was founded in 2010 through a partnership between Zanmi Lasante (Partners in Health) and Operation Blessing and has since grown and expanded to include a 30-room dormitory, dining hall and bakery, arts and music center, library, outdoor play area and more.

Now, it has another new addition to celebrate: Chapel Saint Rose of Lima.

Lending a hand in new hospital in Haiti

Mirebalais Hospital

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Operation Blessing is playing a role in the opening of an important new teaching hospital in Haiti that will fill a huge void for Haitians who previously had limited access to quality health care.

The Hôpital Universitaire de Mirebalais (HUM), in Mirebalais, Haiti, created by Partners In Health, hosted a Celebration of Partnership event to recognize the contributions of its partner organizations to the construction of the new hospital. The 205,000-square foot, 300-bed facility will provide primary care services to about 185,000 people in Mirebalais and two nearby communities. But patients from a much wider area—all of central Haiti and areas in and around Port-au-Prince—also will be able to receive secondary and tertiary care.
