Students Dress For Success In South Carolina
"Marcy's" parents struggled to provide for her and a baby brother. Cramped in a 10' x 50' trailer, the couple was saving what they could from their meager salaries to buy a small piece of land with a double-wide trailer. Marcy knew buying school clothes wasn't an option. But It was her first year of high school, and she wished for something nice.
Even though they had participated in OBI's Back-To-School events before, Marcy's mom Angie applied to take part in one of five shopping days held in Charleston, South Carolina. Soon, they received the good news. "My daughter just grinned when she found out," wrote the happy mother. "I want you to know, you have helped our family tremendously and we appreciate it very much. It's reinforced God's love for us."
Three hundred and sixty-three elementary, junior high, and high school children like Marcy shopped for school clothes and supplies last August and September. They came from low income communities including north Charleston and Johns Island. As OBI's center leader and founder of In His Steps Ministry, Bob Howorka worked with local churches and Wal-Mart to make these events possible.
All of his efforts were appreciated by many of the grateful parents; parents like Donald and Jo. Recently becoming permanently disabled due to a severe back injury, Donald could no longer provide for his five children. Ranging in ages 8-13, the children's clothes were becoming small and shoes were worn. With no available resources, they relied on OBI. "...we are truly blessed," wrote in Jo. "We thank everyone and are very grateful, without you, they wouldn't have gotten as much."
Thank you OBI partners for giving to OBI's Back-To-School program!
Continue assisting those families in need by giving to this year's BTS program!
