Mother Seeks Self-esteem For Daughter
Mexico -- Mayra sat quietly during class while her schoolmates chatted. Once in a while the 12-year-old would be asked a question. She would just shake her head "yes" or "no" hoping it was the right response. The others would laugh and tease her all the more. Mayra's hearing-aid battery had died long ago. With three children to support, her mother couldn't afford to buy the needed battery. Mayra slid down in the chair, hoping to become invisible. What would happen to this precious girl?
Mrs. Norma was worried about her daughter Mayra. She didn't want to go to school or study anymore. Abandoned by her husband, Mrs. Norma worked hard as a maid and sold crafts to provide for her children. Not knowing what else to do, the mother approached the nearby Association Mexicana Esperanza (AME), a part of Operation Blessing's international network, to see if they would accept Mayra into their free program. Mayra's sister Madel and brother Jesus already attended the AME's human development sessions and cultural activities.
Given a positive answer, Mrs. Norma told Mayra the good news. In the next few days, Mayra received school supplies, medication, a dental cleaning and most importantly, a new battery for her hearing-aid! She began attending the weekly AME children's club and started sharing with a group of new friends. She also learned how to deal with other children's attitudes toward her disability. Self-confidence and esteem grew in the soon enthusiastic girl. Mayra decided to continue studying so she could be promoted to secondary school.
"The Club de Ninos AME is very useful because it helps children improve physically and spiritually," Mrs. Norma shared. "I have seen a very noticeable change in my children. Now we trust each other more and my daughters don't fight as they used to. Thank you for being here!"
In addition to the weekly human development classes and cultural activities for dozens of children living in poor households, AME also coordinates a free dental brigade supported by dental professionals in the area.
Through its many programs including Bless-A-Child, OBI has eased the worried hearts of hundreds of thousands of mothers around the world by investing in the lives of their children. For the mother's who don't have the resources to help their children, please help make their Mother's Day special this year.
