Impoverished Students Able
To Attend Class
Like numerous
countries in the world, Cambodia charges weekly school fees. Children also
are required to wear uniforms. Making approximately 30 USD a month, many
parents can’t afford to send their children to school regularly. It’s
common for boys and girls living in poor households to be in class one week
and not the next. This pattern results in embarrassment causing students
to drop out completely. See how OBI was able to help…
Nob smiles for the camera as
he holds onto a new backpack filled with supplies including pencils, notebooks,
crayons, an eraser, water bottle and ruler. He looks forward to wearing
his two new sets of uniforms, shoes and hat! The 11-year-old boy lives with
his two brothers, three sisters and parents. Nob’s father makes a
meager living as a motor taxi driver around Phnom Penh while his mother
cares for the house and children.
Nob was selected to be a recipient of OBI Cambodia’s Back-To-School
2002 program. This was the second year that Nob participated and received
supplies, uniforms and most precious of all, a year’s scholarship
to attend classes! He exclaimed, “I am very excited that my school
fee is covered because it is very helpful to my parents! I will study
hard in order to become a doctor when I grow up. I would like to give
thanks to the donors and Operation Blessing International since it’s
because of them, I have hope.”
Nine-year-old Viriak piped up, “This really helps my family a lot.
When I grow up I would like to be a teacher. I would like to say thank
you to the donors and Operation Blessing International who have blessed
me. I hope they will continue to share their blessings with others also.”
Viriak lives with his hard working mother, two brothers and one sister.
Nob and Viriak are two of fifty-five children that OBI Cambodia helped
during the 2002 Back-To-School program. Ages five through fourteen, the
children all lived in poor conditions. However, with the help of Operation
Blessing and five partnering churches, these boys and girls' real needs
were met.
Operation Blessing is building strong hearts, minds and bodies by helping
at-risk children around the world.
