Remembering Low Income Families During Easter

It was Easter season and Kimberly’s body was worn out from the flu. This single mother’s three children had all caught the nasty bug too. Even if she had been well enough to go shopping, Kimberly did not have any extra money to buy Easter baskets. She worked hard as a substitute teacher and a manicurist, but it was always a stretch to pay for the family’s basic needs.

It hurt Kimberly to think that her boys would go back to school only to hear what all of their friends received on Easter and be embarrassed that they didn’t get anything. Thanks to our partners, that didn’t happen.

Operation Blessing’s partner, The Sanctuary of Hope took on an ambitious goal earlier this month. After overhearing some of the boys and girls at our after school program say the gifts from us at Christmas were the only presents they got, Rev. Frank Allen grew concerned about Easter. It was hard enough for these kids to live in the inner-city without being made fun of by their peers. By partnering with his vast network in Hampton Roads, Virginia, he coordinated the Easter basket outreach.

This Easter, more than 4,000 children living in low income households received baskets filled with candy, toys and books. Kimberly’s children Colton, Colby and Sinclair were among those very happy children!

Bless a Child is 20 Years Old
Since 1984, over 2.7 million children around the world have been helped through our Bless a Child program. Our centers reach out to children and youth with food, clothing, medical services, educational and mentoring programs. Whether newborn or teens, we strive to help each at-risk child feel self-worth and give them the building blocks needed to lead a successful life. It could be something as simple as an Easter basket to show them they are special.

Your gift of $25 or more can help lift a child out of poverty.
