Rescuing India's Disaster Victims

Posted: February 15th, 2001

Slabs of bent steel and jagged concrete decorate Bhuj, India's broken landscape. India's caste system has deprived poor disaster victims from receiving desperately needed relief supplies. They have resorted to stripping steel iron off of destroyed buildings and selling it for food.

On January 26th the richest town in India was reduced to a pile of rubble. Entire rows of apartments became crumbled messes. The nightmare continues three weeks later as many who lost their lives have not yet been recovered beneath the tons of building material. Because of this, an additional threat of a disease outbreak is very real. Shocked families still stare at the destruction for any signs of life from trapped loves ones. Even though rescue teams leave, they still hope.

The earth also took the lives of many medical staff and patients in Bhuj's hospital. Two days after the dust had settled, rescue workers found the hospital's sole survivor.... a precious 7-month-old premature baby boy. Oliver was quickly placed into the loving arms of a local nurse for adoption! "When Oliver grows up he will learn that God protected him from the earthquake," commented OBI contact Kumar Periasamy during his recent damage evaluation.

Rebuilding plans are nonexistent. According to Kumar, "It will take more than a year for people to even have the necessary resources to construct homes." So far OBI has provided 2,000 families with tents and plans to give 2,000 more with your help! For just $5 a family of five can receive food and a tent. That's just $1 per person!

Help OBI continue to assist the hundreds of thousands of displaced disaster victims around the world!
