Hunger Strike Force and Disaster Relief

    Dangerous Floods Hit Mozambique Again!

(03/02/01)Flood waters again threaten almost 200,000 people living in northwestern Mozambique. This week, over sixty men, women, and children lost their lives and more than 81,000 are homeless. Rescue boats battle the Zambezi River's swift current in trying to evacuate the nearly 170,000 individuals at risk. OBI can't send desperately needed survival items with out your help!

Heavy rains in the northern neighboring countries of Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi have forced the Zambezi and Save Rivers to swell, causing pressure on the Calhora Bassa and Kariba Dams. CNN reported officials having to open two floodgates of the Calhora or the wall would be at risk of collapsing. Even though their crops are destroyed, some farmers have declined rescue in order to stay with their few possessions.

"We have a huge responsibility to help very needy people," comments OBI's President Bob Fanning.

When last year's floods killed 700 and left more than 500,000 homeless, OBI, Feed The Hungry, and Le Sea Global's MV Evangeline responded by sending over five million pounds of disaster and hunger relief supplies to WorldReach contacts in Mozambique! OBI's Hunger Strike Force tractor trailers transported dozens of truckloads to Lamberts Point Docks in Norfolk, Virginia. HSF staff also managed the warehouse as the supplies came in and arranged for commercial trucking lines to help with additional loads of product. The surplus of the shipment is now being distributed to those who need it in this newest tragedy, but that won't be enough!
