OBI shows medical relief in diverse ways. Volunteer medical professionals have provided over 251,300 free services in more than 21 countries around the world. We also frequently provide medical equipment and supplies to health care facilities in developing areas where supplies are low and equipment is impossible to get. Sometimes different kinds of requests come across Medical Outreach Director Dick Kohl's desk.
Most recently, OBI center leader Jim Wingate heard that a non profit organization called World Care located in Tucson, Arizona needed help. They had run short of funding just before sending a container holding approximately 11,560 pounds of emergency medical supplies to the Hermanas del Buel Samaritano Hospital in Molina, Chile! Donated items valued at $250,000 included bandages, surgical kits for various operations, and operating room drapes.

World Care's Tools for Health program had hoped to help thousands of homeless and indigent Chileans through this shipment. According to the World Fact Book 2000, 22% of Chile's population lives below the poverty line. If families are struggling to buy basic necessities, paying for sometimes required bandages and surgical supplies for their own needed operations is out of the question!
With the help of OBI partners, Dick Kohl was able to assist World Care with getting the shipment through customs and into the hands of those in need! "Thanks to you, they have hope in their hearts," wrote World Care's President Lisa Hopper.
