Healing In Afghanistan Has Begun

Posted: September 24th, 2002

Afghanistan -- During September's visit, Operation Blessing's relief worker Kumar checked on the progress of the OBI and Touch Community Services sponsored rebuilding of Istalif's medical clinic. It should be completed by the end of October. Kumar also worked on making final arrangements to build a girl's school for over 400 students in Istalif. In addition, Operation Blessing volunteers have been busy bringing humanitarian relief to hundreds of Afghans through two medical clinics.

Tangesaidan, meaning "narrow valley", is a remote village tucked in between the high mountains. Home to approximately 200 families, many work as farmers while others make the difficult commute to the capital. Overwhelmingly poor and victims to twenty-two years of factional fighting as well as foreign aggression, they are fortunate to have an International Foundation of Hope based medical clinic. Last month, Operation Blessing India actively participated with them in conducting a two-day camp at the clinic. Three Afghan doctors and one Indian dentist provided medical services to 285 patients!

Translator and local support person Rehmat Gul shared, β€œIt is for the first time for many that people have seen a dentist. It was a big relief to many people who were taking local medicines like roots and herbs. Today they will have a permanent relief.”

During the camp, recipients were heard commenting that Afghanistan's healing has begun!

Operation Blessing also set up a temporary dental camp in International Foundation of Hope's school. During the Taliban rule, the school continued with great difficulty. Now after the war, 20 percent of the 365 students are fatherless. In order to address these children's needs, Operation Blessing gave all students and staff free dental screenings. Eighty children and five staff received further dental work. Medicines and vitamins were also freely distributed according to each patient's needs.

Having survived Kabul's turbulence, English teacher Mohammad Alim expressed this is one of the very best things to happen to the children in his time of teaching. β€œI am very happy. On behalf of my staff and students I wish to thank Operation Blessing for the free dental services," he commented. "I am deeply touched by this act of care and kindness.”

With the solid support of our partners, Operation Blessing was able to quickly respond to Afghanistan's desperate needs almost a year ago. As the months passed, we fed countless refugees, brought medical assistance to thousands of sickly individuals and helped the Afghan people rebuild their lives. Thank you for being heroes to those who don't even know you!

Please help us in continuing to rebuild the lives of those hurting around the world.
