Slowly climbing 50 km of invisible roads, vehicles jostled food and disaster relief supplies. Having suffered through both drought and war, 500 families living in the remote mountain village of Lalandar were anxiously awaiting the promised assistance. Read the latest Afghan update...
Early Wednesday morning OBI's relief worker departed Kabul, Afghanistan with enough food and disaster relief supplies for 500 families who "had no other means of assistance whatsoever." Loaded with basic food, blankets and warm clothing, the caravan had to stop five miles before reaching their final destination. The snow and cold did not stop the excited and determined village from pushing their handcarts and riding donkeys to the alternate location.
Lalandar has had its share of upheaval in the last twenty years. Many fled their homes during the Russian occupation and then returned to rebuild before the Taliban came to power, only to be oppressed. While OBI's relief worker was doing his preliminary site review earlier this week, the village's hydroelectric pump broke, sending everyone's homes into darkness. After meeting with the village leaders, OBI was able to provide matching funds amounting to just $100. Parts were purchased and the pump now works!
"We give thanks to the Lord for his provision in allowing Operation Blessing to touch his people," commented Richard Kohl, Director of Disaster Relief.
In addition to assisting the people of Lalandar, 300 school-aged children received small pencil cases with pencils, sharpener and ruler as well as a textbook. A special surprise came when they opened a translated note from an American child. They will in turn write notes to their new friends. Living on the side of a mountain, these children live in the midst of destroyed schools with nothing to do. A new burst of creativity is sure to come when they begin using these new supplies.
