In a time of great need, the need just got bigger. The 7.2 earthquake that hit Afghanistan during the first week of March collapsed homes, scattered flocks, and shook the hearts of Afghan women and children to the core. It posed another huge challenge in the already difficult task of rebuilding their lives and nation.
Prepared to continue humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan and Pakistan, OBI's relief worker was already in route to Afghanistan on Sunday when further tragedy struck Afghans living in the north province of Samanagan.
The Afghan interim government estimated 150 people lost their lives, when an earthquake struck. Hundreds of homes were flooded due to resulting landslides and many were injured through out the region. Communication technology and passable roads are virtually nonexistent in some areas, making relief efforts difficult. There were 9 reported deaths and 30 injuries in the capital city of Kabul alone.
After recieving an assessment of additional needs facing the innocent victims in this diaster and war weary land, OBI will respond with food, blankets, medical assistance or other relief supplies as we are able. Already, OBI is assisting Afghan families by sponsoring a soup kitchen for refugees in Pakistan; distributing food and other essentials to young widows with children in rural villages outside Kabul; and coordinating medical services in these same areas. With the help of OBI's generous supporters, over 6,000 hot meals are still being provided to families each day throughout the week.
Last weekend's devastating earthquake has made Afghan children and families even more vulnerable in an hour of great need. Please assist us in aiding the innocent today!
