Hampton Roads,
Virginia -- Martha thankfully sat down in a folding chair next to a friend.
It had been almost a week since Hurricane Isabel had knocked out the elderly
woman's electricity. All of her food had spoiled days ago, forcing Martha
to wonder how she was going to eat. Then, she found out that Sanctuary of
Hope, an Operation Blessing partner, would be setting up a mobile canteen
right in front of her building! The food and neighborhood fellowship were
just what she needed to make it through the storm's aftermath.
The last two weeks has been busier than usual for Sanctuary of Hope's
Frank Allen. Working with Operation Blessing, numerous churches and organizations
across Virginia's Hampton Roads area, Sanctuary of Hope served hurricane
victims over 600 meals every day from September 20-26th. They helped the
elderly like Martha. Many were without transportation and struggled to
get by on a fixed income; so replacing spoiled food was just not possible
for them. During that week, the hot meal Martha ate at the canteen was
all she had each day! "More than anything I'm thankful for the church
folks that helped me," expressed the grateful woman.
Thank you partners! With your help over the last two weeks, thousands
of men, women and children living in Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina
have eaten hot meals, received cleaning supplies and were encouraged in
their darkest hour by neighbors they never knew before. We have also been
able to distribute 30 truck loads of food and relief supplies in partnership
with The Salvation Army and Dominion Power. See a breakdown of Operation
Blessing's disaster relief efforts below.
