| Destroyed House |
Recently, volunteers from one of our partnering organizations were
driving through the neighborhoods in Wachula, Florida looking for families
in need of hurricane assistance. They soon stumbled into Bessie.
Bessie’s house had been hit so hard by hurricane Charley that she
was forced to move in with her son’s family. His home had also received
a lot of damage, but was livable. The family of four had run out of food
and were unable to get more due to a lack of transportation.
Thanks to Operation Blessing and Somebody Cares Tampa Bay, the volunteers
were able to give them enough food, paper products, water and charcoal
to make it through the next few days. Bessie and her family couldn’t
thank them enough!
While giving food and supplies to hurricane survivors gathered at a severely
damaged gas station, volunteers met Ruth and her son. The single mother’s
home was badly damaged by the hurricane. She runs her own home business
and can’t work until things are repaired. She had run out of money
and food. “The food you gave us has helped us,” commented
Ruth. “Thank you for all you have done.”
Operation Blessing has partnered with organizations including The Salvation
Army, Florida Baptist Convention, the Florida Catholic Conference and
the Church of God Wimauma Convention Center, in delivering over 2.76 million
pounds of food and relief supplies to survivors. This translates into
hundreds of thousands of hot meals!
There’s a lot more to do. Not only are we helping the survivors
of Charley and Frances, but also preparing for Hurricane Ivan. Please
help us assist those who are dealing with sweltering humidity, hunger,
lack of power and the feeling that their lives will never return to normal.
