For the two-week duration of the emergency medical clinic, OBI helped over 1,675 flood victims.

EAST JAVA, Indonesia - Early January, flash flooding swept through the district of Jember, East Java Indonesia killing 74 people and displacing thousands from their home.

“Rain poured down heavily and the water rose higher and higher,” said 28-year-old Asyiah. “Then the flood came . . . rolling up with soil, mud and rocks from the forest. I felt like giving up. All I could think about was death.”

Asyiah lived in Keputren village, one of hardest-hit areas by the flood. Losing her house and two children, she remained buried under a mudslide for seven hours before being rescued by a neighbor.

OB Indonesia responded to the disaster immediately, sending mobile medical teams to the remote areas as well as launching an emergency medical clinic to treat victims at the local community disaster center.

“The presence of OB Indonesia was really needed by the victims of the flood and the medical clinic was really helpful for us,” said Muhlis, a Moslem cleric who helped oversee the disaster center. “With OB working with us, we can help more people – especially those who haven’t been reached.”

During the two-week span that OB Indonesia was on site providing medical relief, a total 1,675 patients were treated.

“I am so happy knowing that someone cares for me and will help me,” Asyiah said. “This medical service has helped people who suffered through the flash flood like me, and I would like to thank everyone who has helped me from the beginning to the end.”
