OBI aids thousands in Israel and Lebanon

OBI has partnered with Humedica to provide medical aid to refugees in southern Lebanon.

David Darg, assistant director of international programs, is on the ground in Lebanon coordinating OBI’s relief efforts.

As thousands of refugees continue to crowd local schools and refugee camps in Israel and Lebanon, OBI and partners are expanding their relief efforts to provide medical care to those in need.

With no available shower facilities, hygiene products and nearly 2,000 refugees living in one school – an average of 20 to a classroom – the health of the refugees is suffering and the need for medical care is critical.

Operation Blessing's German partner organization, Humedica, has a team of doctors and medical personnel responding to the health care needs of more than 3,500 refugees.

"...fatigue is taking its toll on the health of the camp..."

"The doctors are reporting an increase in diarrhea and stomach problems," he said. "The whole refugee population is suffering from physical and emotional fatigue associated with the long journey they have had to endure. This fatigue is taking its toll on the health of the camp and we are seeing a heightened level of sicknesses like the flu and respiratory infections."

OBI and Humedica expect the number of refugees needing medical treatment to increase to nearly 20,000.

As medical teams administer medicines to refugees, OBI and partners are also working to distribute 3,000 hygiene packs containing items such as soap, shampoo, toothbrushes and toothpaste. The packs will serve around 18,000 refugees.

Thanks to OBI and partnering organizations, several thousand refugees have received hot meals.

In addition to medical relief, OBI continues to fund the delivery of food and emergency aid to refugee families in both Israel and Lebanon.

"In cooperation with different organizations, our team is distributing food, mattresses, meals, toys and medical supplies," said an OBI relief worker. "This aid will help around 900 to 1,000 families in the next few days."
