Operation Blessing feeds over 6,000 Guatemalan children

Over 6,000 Guatemalan children received more than 26,000 food packs and over 22,000 pounds of milk.

OBI distributed food packs to four Guatemalan communities still suffering from Hurricane Stan.

GUATEMALA - Nine months after Hurricane Stan struck Guatemala, Operation Blessing has completed its latest project of recovery for over 6,000 children living in areas severely damaged by the October 2005 storm.

Workers distributed over 22,000 pounds of milk and more than 26,000 packs of dry food to the four communities of Jutiapa, Chiquimulilla, San Marcos, and Quetzaltenango, Guatemala.

The hunger relief project was launched to provide good nutrition for children whose diets have become less stable in the months following the storm.

Although Stan only reached a category 1, the continuous rain saturated the ground, causing floods and mudslides that killed at least 670 people in Quetzaltenango alone.

Thousands more were left homeless or jobless as the mudslides destroyed houses, roads, and bridges across the country.

In addition to Hurricane Stan relief, Operation Blessing continues to provide ongoing relief to Hurricane Katrina victims in the Gulf Coast through Fast-Track cash grants, feeding kitchens, debris removal, a medical and dental clinic and more.
