JAKARTA, Indonesia - Local hospitals in the hard-hit Bengkulu province are reporting at least 20 people dead and 120 wounded following a powerful 8.4-magnitude earthquake that struck off the southern coast of Sumatra yesterday morning.
It was followed by two other quakes with magnitudes 7.8 and 6.2, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Operation Blessing Indonesia was the first (non-government) relief agency to arrive in Bengkulu. A fully-equipped medical team of 13 is working with local hospitals to assist in treating injured victims.
Four of the doctors are from the Indonesian Surgeons Association, an organization OB partners with during disasters. OBI's logistics team met earlier with the provincial governor to assess the extent of damage, particularly in more rural areas.
