    Hunger Strike Force

Floating Food Fills Empty Stomachs (Angola & Ukraine)

With bowls and spoons in hand and stomachs growling, they eagerly wait to receive a nutritious meal. These Angolan children haven't eaten anything since yesterday's lunch. Not because they were out playing or studying, but because their families can't afford to feed them.

Civil war has continued to rip apart Angola since 1975, causing country-wide food, water, medicine, and utility shortages. Police are armed with automatic weapons. Just yesterday CNN reported that Angolan troops had retaken the city of Kibaxi from rebel forces. In the nearby capital city of Luanda 1.2 million poverty stricken families live in a barrio. Approximately 2,500 of their children attend the one and only active school, where they are fed once a day.

Through OBI's generous partners, The Hunger Strike Force picked up food and helped ship a container filled with much needed pasta, rice casserole, and vitamin supplements to the Angolan school this past January - enough to help feed the darling children for 3 months. It takes approximately 30 days for a container to "float" on a ship from Norfolk to Angola. The food is was scheduled to arrive this week. The follows up food sent at the end of last year.

The Hunger Strike Force assists OBI international programs by picking up product from the donor, warehousing, packing the needed supplies into containers, and transporting them to U.S. ports-of-call for shipment to countries including Angola, Romania, Ukraine, and Guatemala.

Lives of both young and old are permanently changed through the food and other supplies sent. Nadezhda and her husband didn't have any food to eat on his 70th birthday until a package arrived on their doorstep. A work-related accident had caused the Ukrainian couple to loose their main source of income and all remaining money went towards medicine and utilities. Without family, they lived in fear of being thrown out of their apartment onto the street. Gratefully Nadezhda writes, "We appreciate your care for the elderly people and may God bless you!"

Your continued support of the Hunger Strike Force will enable the truck driver's to pick up needed food and impact hungry men, women, and children around the world!
