Hunger Strike Force
Extending Arms Of Compassion To Arizona's Hungry
Arizona's dry desert wind crept into a cheaply made tent and tiptoed across a child's sleeping face. Rustling its' way out, the wind peeked into many of the nearby homeless tent dwellings and left a comforting breeze behind. Just a stone's throw away, bags brimming full of groceries sat ready in a church for volunteers to give to their backyard guests.
Homeless men, women, and children migrate to Tucson from across the country in search of mild weather and set up numerous camps across the desert sand.
As director's of OBI's Arizona center and a HSF food drop-off for over six years, Jim and Sue Wingate have crossed both racial and economic fences in bringing food to the hungry. Through a large local network of over sixty churches, each month this couple's arms of compassion help feed approximately 4,000 struggling families in Tucson, Wilcox, Phoenix, and as far north as the White Mountains. In addition to those in low-income situations, Mexican migrant workers, the elderly, and the homeless receive nourishment.
"We love what we do," Jim comments. "Sue and I strive to unify and mobilize the body of Christ through serving the poor."
"Lucy" and her small children were living on the street until a family from a local church within the Wingate's network adopted them. Over the next four months, the "Johnson's" and their children became friends with Lucy and her children as well as brought food and helped Lucy get a job. When this excited mom moved into her very own apartment and got the phone hooked up, she called the Johnsons in gratitude!
Desperate situations like these have turned into life-lasting friendships thanks to you, our faithful OBI partner. Remember, during March and April your contribution to the Hunger Strike Force will be stretched even further through The Feinstein Foundation's $1 million challenge. The more you give to HSF, the more of the $1 million will be sent to us. Thank you for helping HSF driving away America's hunger!
