"Children are our most precious possession," a famous person once said. Across the United States, tens of thousands of our most precious possessions are going to bed with painfully empty stomachs. Their hardworking parents aren't punishing them; there just isn't money to fill the empty cupboards.
For nine years, OBI's Hunger Strike Force truck drivers have driven hundreds of thousands of miles in the pursuit of fighting America's hunger. Meet just a few of our most precious possessions and feel their struggle in the quest to eat one meal every day...
In Georgia, a knock sounded at the front door of "John's" house. The Georgian father and his twin boys were astounded to realize the couple standing outside held desperately needed groceries! After his wife left the family, John began a new job and had fallen behind financially. The bills were paid, but there wasn't anything left for food. He and the boys had been sleeping in sleeping bags by a kerosene heater in the living room and cooking the last of their food on a hot plate. "The boys are so sweet and well mannered," commented A.O.E. leader Joe Costa, a HSF partnering ministry. "It just broke our hearts."
Not Enough...
Angry shouts woke Maria. This single mother's eight children were fighting again. It wasn't over what to watch on television or what games to play, but who would get to eat today. Money earned on a California farm would pay for basic bills, but often there would not be enough for groceries. Maria sought help from a local OBI center and was given the needed food. Now normal sibling rivalry could take place!
Hunger In The Midst of Wealth...
California's Silicon Valley is known for its' computer industry, but for thousands, it's sky high living costs make it difficult for even those living on "good" salaries to provide food for their children. Multiple families are forced to share cramped living quarters. Recently, the Hunger Strike Force worked with Fresh Express, Safeway grocery chains, as well as other organizations in distributing 6,000 bags of nutritious food to Silicon Valley's hungry.
