Second Annual Dallas Spring Fest A Success!
Sitting patiently, Miss Cybil waited for her turn to pre-register for the second annual Spring Fest in Dallas. Once priding herself in dressing fashionably and volunteering in her community, this elderly lady now barely survives on a fixed income. The promised bags of groceries, cleaning supplies and toiletry items would be a great help to Miss Cybil and thousands of Dallas' working poor.
The sun shone over Fair Park on Good Friday, April 13th. Five of OBI's Hunger Strike Force tractor-trailers roared into Dallas, pulling in 114 tons of free product for the city of Dallas and People That Care International sponsored event. Hundreds of volunteers bagged fresh produce, canned goods, beverages, Easter candy, cleaning supplies, and toiletry items while over 40 organizations and corporations set up their booths. Still others began preparing more than 20,000 hotdogs for guests.
As over 17,000 men, women, and children arrived for the day-long event, they were treated with not only full grocery bags, but also free haircuts, dental checkups, and eye exams. One could also pick up employment, health, housing and other social service information. Children had a picture with the Easter Bunny, got their faces painted, played games and left with balloons in hand.
This event was deemed a success by People That Care's Bruce Phillips. "This thing is really growing," said Bruce. "Corporate Dallas is getting behind this event!" At day's end, more than 5,000 families from the Oak Cliff, South Dallas, East Dallas and southeast Dallas communities had been physically helped and emotionally encouraged. "There was a tremendous amount of gratefulness displayed by the guests," continued Bruce. As an added bonus, left over product from the day's festivities was given to local food pantries.
