    Hunger Strike Force

Remembering Virginia's Hungry On Memorial Weekend

Quizzically he studied the strangers who were handing out overstuffed white plastic bags to his neighbors. This Portsmouth, Virginia man wondered what he had to do to receive free groceries like the others. With great relief, he realized all he had to do was get in line just like everyone else.

It was early on the cloudy Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. A Hunger Strike Force tractor trailer pulled up in St. Matthew's Nondenominational Church's parking lot with more than 18,000 pounds of product. Once unloaded, over seventy-five volunteers sorted and bagged items including canned goods, cereal, bottled drinks, and candy. In spite of threatening thunderstorms, approximately six hundred Norcum Park families responded throughout the day to volunteer's invitations.

Volunteer Walt Soto and his seven-year-old son, "loved every minute of it!" Having been on the administrative end of many international medical missions, Walt was excited to be a part of the "hands on" distribution. "I always desire to lead my family in ways to serve people in a practical way. OBI's food distributions minister God's love in a personal and practical way," he commented. "This is not a handout; it's an expression of God's love."

The new furry, honey-colored OB Bear was busy during his debut appearance. He passed out groceries, played with children, and gave hugs. One little boy was so enthralled with OB, he followed the bear everywhere! In addition to OBI and St. Matthew's Nondenominational Church, the day's sponsors included Norfolk's Emmanuel Pentecostal Church of God.

OBI partners, thank you for helping us make this a memorable Memorial Day weekend for hundreds of Virginia's poor.
