Baltimore Ravens 1400, Hunger 0

Posted: December 7th, 2001

Hunger was sacked as the Baltimore Ravens, Operation Blessing's Hunger Strike Force and over 200 volunteers gave 4,200 bags of groceries to 1,400 families in need last Saturday! See who kicked the winning field goal...

It was 8 o'clock Saturday morning. Pallets of bagged salad, cereal, sweet potatoes, onions, rice, canned beans, drinks, blankets and other items had been unloaded from one Hunger Strike Force truck and one Safeway truck. Volunteers representing organizations including the Nehemiah House, Men of Destiny, and Safeway as well as the event's co-sponsor, The Leon Searcy Jr. Foundation, were busy filling bags of food inside the Pleasant Gardens Community Center grounds as hungry guests began forming lines for the noon food distribution.

Participating in his first food distribution, OBI's Joshua Davis was amazed to see how more than 200 strangers worked as a team toward one common goal. "It was neat to see the mounds and mounds of filled blue bags waiting to be distributed," he shared.

Nehemiah Houses' Pastor Brown thought it was important for eighteen preteens he had brought with him to experience servant hood in action. Another volunteer, fondly called "Grandpa" by all, remarked, "People are in need and I'm here to help in any way I can."

A cloudless afternoon sky and sounds of the Boys & Girls Club marching band spiced up the event. "This is making a big difference in the community," said Elkisha, a mother of two. She and every other adult guest received three bags of groceries. One thousand children also got a special gift bag containing a video, CD, stuffed teddy bear and candy.

Ten beloved Baltimore Ravens players including Leon Searcy, Mike Flynn and Terry Allen were also present helping with the distribution and signing autographs. "The Ravens' organization and coaches encourage players to reach out to the community," commented lineman Mike Flynn. "It's a no brainier to come out and give."

When all was said and done, Baltimore police officers and local outreach centers were given the remainder of the 55,000 pounds of food for the homeless and hungry.

So, who kicked the winning field goal? Everyone involved did, including partners like you who support OBI's Hunger Strike Force. Be a part of this winning team and help us continue to successfully tackle opponents like Hunger, Poverty and Disaster with a score in the "W" column!
