Navajo Partner Rejoices

Posted: September 24th, 2002

Ship rock, New Mexico -- Isabelle couldn't believe what she was seeing. One of Operation Blessing's red and white Hunger Strike Force tractor-trailers was driving through Gallup, New Mexico! As a proud Operation Blessing partner since 1990, a glance of the 18-wheeler on her homeland was enough for this elderly Navajo woman to know her prayers had been answered. That experience was a couple of years ago. But wait, her glance turned into much more last month!

In Navajo it's "Rock With Wings". To those who don't speak Navajo the reservation town is called Shiprock. Home to less than 10,000 people, and the location of "the oldest and most traditional Navajo Fair", this beautiful desert area is located in New Mexico's northwest corner. In spite of the scenic view, many of Shiprock's residents live a poverty-stricken existence, not knowing where the next meal is going to come from.

Families and individuals began sitting under the tent's roof for the first session during First Baptist Church Shiprock's three-day meeting. In addition to offering spiritual food, there would be a food distribution the following day. Event coordinators Rose and Jerry Johnson were excited to partner with Hunger Strike Force's (HSF) West Coast team in this first-time community outreach. Not knowing of Operation Blessing's involvement, Isabelle sat down for Friday's meeting. OBI's Charlie and Linda Lotshaw struck up a conversation with this precious lady and it was decided she would come to see the food distribution.

Saturday arrived and Isabelle saw first-hand how the fruit of her faithful giving and prayers helped four hundred families (average of 6 people per family) receive groceries. With a little help, she happily climbed up into the HSF's driver's seat. She already is looking forward to next year's second annual event where the goal is to assist 600-800 families!

Operation Blessing thanks our partners like Isabelle for their generous support. There will always be hungry men, women and children among us. You can help us in continuing to relieve their hunger today! Who knows, you might see a Hunger Strike Force truck driving through your town.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
