Nosma’s family lives in South Africa’s Thulani squatter camp. Most living in this poverty stricken community either work long, hard hours and are paid little for their efforts or can not find employment. In 1995, Nosma lost her job as a housekeeper when the employer moved. Her husband was also out of work. After almost eight years of wondering where their next meal would come from, the family was finally offered a promising opportunity.

Operation Blessing sponsors many of Jesus is the Answer Ministries’ humanitarian programs. It was through the sewing program and correlating daycare that Nosma’s life turned around. She was accepted and soon began learning how to become a seamstress. But without free daycare and daily food for her children, it would have been extremely difficult for the mother to pursue the new career. Nosma shares, “We struggle to feed ourselves and the family, let alone to send the young ones to day care.”

Now several months later, Nosma has successfully completed the seamstress training and works at a garment manufacturing company. She is able to provide nutritious food for her family at a time where at least 15 million South African’s are facing food shortages after experiencing a severe drought in 2003.

The sewing program is just one of the ways South African children and their parents are often times receiving their only meal of the day. Through Jesus is the Answer Ministries, we are passing out food parcels, hot meals, blankets and clothing in numerous squatter camps as well as on the streets were the homeless and displaced live.
